Why Argentina Should Be Your Next Big Trip

By Megan · Luxury Travel Advisor · Bismarck, ND

Plan Your Trip

"I just returned from Argentina — and it's one of the most diverse, surprising, beautiful destinations I've ever experienced."

Glaciers. Wine Country. And Everything Between.

From glaciers rising out of ancient forests to world-class wine regions and European-inspired cities, Argentina truly has it all. I spent time across El Calafate, Ushuaia, Buenos Aires, and Mendoza — and attended EMOTIONS, a premier travel conference connecting top suppliers across Central and South America.

I came home with one clear takeaway: this is a destination where having the right connections changes everything. As a luxury travel advisor based in Bismarck, ND, I design Argentina itineraries that go far beyond what you'll find in any guidebook.

Insider Tip · Timing Is Everything

April is the best time to go. You'll avoid peak crowds, experience stunning fall foliage, and still have full access to Argentina's most iconic experiences. Patagonia in April? Absolute magic.

What You Won't See on Instagram

Yes, you've seen the photos of Patagonia. But what you haven't seen is what it actually takes to experience it well. Weather changes every 15 minutes. Wind is not a joke — it's a force of nature. And small decisions (like where you eat lunch) can make or break your day.

At my favorite hotel in El Calafate, EOLO Relais & Châteaux, I always advise clients to skip the boxed lunch and opt for a seated restaurant meal with window views — otherwise you risk eating outside in the wind. Or the rain. Or both. That's the kind of detail you only learn by working with someone who's actually been there.

The Logistics They Don't Put in Guidebooks

Argentina is incredible — but it isn't always easy. A few things that often surprise even experienced travelers:

  • ATMs often don't work with foreign cards — I guide clients on smart cash strategies
  • USD is widely accepted for tipping; ~10% at restaurants is the standard
  • Some airlines have a track record of unreliability — I avoid them for a reason
  • Checked baggage rules are strict — carry-ons over ~33 lbs can be denied at the gate
  • Domestic-to-international connections can mean several hours of waiting — I plan around this
  • Weather changes every 15 minutes — bring layers for multiple seasons in one afternoon

These aren't things you want to figure out mid-trip. With me, you won't have to.

The Wine Country Experience Most Travelers Miss

Mendoza is more than wine — it's a pace of life. Long lunches, mountain views, private blending experiences, and evenings under the stars. The Andes as your backdrop. A glass of Malbec that tastes like nothing you've had before.

Want a private vineyard experience instead of a crowded tasting room? Done. I know exactly how to make Mendoza yours.

This Is Not a DIY Destination.

Argentina rewards travelers who plan well — and punishes those who don't. Between the logistics, the regional differences, and the small-but-critical details, this is exactly the kind of trip where having an expert makes all the difference.
